Ellen Thesleff (1869–1954) was a Finnish artist whose Symbolist beginnings evolved into a vibrant, modernist expression. She studied in Helsinki and Paris, where she formed bonds with like-minded artists such as Helene Schjerfbeck. The landscapes and light of Italy became a recurring inspiration in her work, which was marked by soulful self-portraits and nature motifs. Today, Thesleff is considered a pioneer of Finnish modernism, with a personal and emotionally charged style.
