Domenico Fetti (c. 1588–1624) was an Italian Baroque painter whose dramatic use of light and shadow was influenced by Caravaggio. After establishing himself as a court painter in Mantua, Fetti faced difficulties following the death of his patron, Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga, in 1620. His departure was also fueled by personal feuds with prominent figures in Mantuan society, which made it difficult for him to continue working there.
Fetti relocated to Venice, where he and others brought the first influences of the Roman Baroque style to the city. His work, characterized by its emotional depth and dynamic use of chiaroscuro, had a lasting impact on Venetian painting. Though his career was cut short by his early death, Fetti's innovative approach helped bridge the gap between Roman and Venetian Baroque art.
