Francesco Melzi, a pupil and assistant of Leonardo da Vinci, was a talented Renaissance master in his own right. Despite the evident skill, like many of da Vinci's pupils, he remained in the shadow unable to fully distinguish himself from his master.

This painting depicts Flora, the goddess of springtime and flowers, surrounded by foliage and flowers. Jasmine flowers in her lap and a cluster of columbine in her left hand. As the 'mother of flowers', Flora is commonly featured in spring allegories and here she is portrayed with one breast exposed, emphasizing her nurturing role.
